Annapurna Base Camp Trek – FAQs

  1. How long is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Typically, the trek takes 7–11 days, depending on the route and pace. From Kathmandu you need to travel to Pokhara city ( 200km west) either by road (7 hours) or flight (25minutes). Then, drive 1.5 hours to Nayapul to start trek to ABC including Poon HIll.  Optionally, drive 4 hours to JhinuDanda and complete ABC trek in 7 days.

  1. What is the maximum altitude?

Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130 meters (13,550 ft).

  1. Is this trek suitable for beginners?

Yes. It’s one of Nepal’s most beginner-friendly high-altitude treks. If you are trekking first time in Nepal, this is an ideal route.

  1. Do I need a guide or can I go solo?

As of April 2023, a licensed guide is mandatory for all trekkers in Nepal. However, some trekkers still would insist to go solo.

  1. When is the best time to do the ABC trek?

Spring (Mar–May) and Autumn (Sep–Nov) offer the best views and weather.

  1. Where does the trek start?

Popular starting points include Nayapul, Ghandruk, or Jhinu Danda, after a drive from Pokhara.

  1. Do I need any permits?

Yes, you’ll need:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

  • TIMS card

  1. Is altitude sickness common?

It’s less common than in EBC but still possible. Acclimatize and ascend slowly. Acetazolamide (Diomox0 is also a very common medication to take during trek to avoid the altitude sickness symptoms.  

  1. What type of accommodation is available?

You’ll stay in teahouses/lodges with basic facilities and shared bathrooms. Hot shower might cost extra charge.

  1. Is food available along the way?

Yes. You’ll find dal bhat, noodles, soups, omelets, pancakes, and more.

  1. How much does the trek cost?

Expect to pay around $500–$1,000 USD for a full package depending on length and services.

  1. Is it crowded?

ABC is quite popular, especially during peak seasons.

  1. Is Wi-Fi or charging available?

Yes, but it may cost extra. Some areas have mobile coverage.

  1. What should I pack?

warm Layers ( thermal, fleece, t-shirts), down jacket, trekking boots with warm socks, sleeping bag, rain gear, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle preferably with filter, some basic medications, trekking poles. Most of them can purchased or hired in Kathmandu if you have a day or two extra days prior to starting trek.

  1. Can I combine ABC with other treks?

Yes, you can combine it with Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, or Annapurna Circuit.

  1. Is travel insurance required?

Yes. It should include coverage for altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.

  1. How cold does it get?

Temperatures can drop to -5°C to -10°C at night near base camp.

  1. Is it safe for solo female travelers?

Yes, if you are experienced in similar journey. Nepal is generally safe and welcoming.

  1. Are hot showers available?

Yes, in most teahouses, though they may charge a small fee.

  1. What kind of fitness level is needed?

You should be in moderate physical condition with the ability to hike 5–6 hours daily.
